I’m okay with the FMC having powers or being a magical creature herself and just maintaining excellent fighting skills - either works. I really enjoy gladiator or military settings, but NEED some element of magic/fantasy/paranormal gifts involved. I really only care that the FMC is strong and shows herself to be capable in whatever situation she finds herself in.
It jumps right to the spice, and I wanted a little more character development/plot. A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor by Kathryn Moon. Ones that I did not finish: Four Psychos by Kristy Cunning (book one in the Dark Side series) I just couldn’t get into the writing. The MMC can be equally as amazing, less so, or more so. Saint View Psychos Series by Elle Thorpe. This point is so important! It’s easier to just find a strong FMC, but not so much in these settings. I want her to do exceptionally well, although she does not have to start out this way. Ready to start therapy?
